Victorian Pressed Facing Stock Bricks

Introducing our hand-stacked, coal-fired Pressed Brick, also known as Stock or Facing Brick, which became widely popular during the Victorian Era. This distinctive style of brick is predominantly found in the north of England, specifically in cities such as Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Sheffield, Newcastle, Hull, Furness, Glasgow, and Edinburgh. Our dedication to refining the 18th-century pressed brick-making process allows us to recreate the unique character and charm of Victorian pressed facing bricks, ensuring authenticity in every piece.

Pressed Facing Brick FAQs

How are Victorian Bricks manufactured?

The production of pressed stock bricks involves the use of a specialised press. This ensures the precise compaction of the very thick clay mix. The result is a brick that boasts a dense structure, uniform texture and sharp, well-defined edges. This meticulous process guarantees that each brick aligns seamlessly with the next, creating a visually striking façade that attests to the artistry invested in its creation.

Benefits of traditionally made pressed bricks?

Beyond their aesthetic appeal, these bricks are celebrated for their exceptional weather resistance and unparalleled longevity. Engineered to withstand the harshest elements, these bricks ensure your structures remain resilient and visually captivating for years to come. The compacted nature of pressed bricks not only enhances their durability but also contributes to their ability to maintain a sharp and well-defined appearance over time.

Are heritage bricks tested?

Each brick from Heritage Brick is designed to withstand whatever the British weather can throw at it. From prolonged periods of sub-zero temperatures in winter, summer heatwaves, and the very worst wet and windy conditions – our products can resist them all. All our clay bricks carry a BS EN 771-1 certificate and comply in full of UK and EU laws and standards.

Advantage of using new bricks over reclaimed bricks?

New bricks have several advantages over reclaimed bricks, including:

Quality: New bricks are made to comply with building standards and are of a consistent quality.

Color: New bricks are available in a wide range of colors and are guaranteed to be consistent. Reclaimed bricks can vary in color because they were manufactured at different times.

Size: New bricks are all the same size, while reclaimed bricks can vary in size.

Cost: New bricks are generally cheaper than reclaimed bricks.

The advantages of specifying new bricks are that they are made to an established standard, BS EN 771-1, “Specification for Clay Bricks”. There is a wide selection available and they are typically more cost effective than reclaimed bricks.

How many bricks per square meter?

The number of bricks needed per square meter depends on the type of wall being built and the size of the bricks:

  • Single Skin or one-layer wall: 60 bricks per square meter
  • Double Skin or two-layer wall: 120 bricks per square meter
  • 65 mm metric brick: 60 bricks per square meter
  • 73 mm imperial brick: 51 bricks per square meter
  • 75 mm Imperial brick: 50 bricks per square meter
  • 70 mm brick: 55 bricks per square meter
  • 62 mm brick: 62 bricks per square meter
  • 50 mm brick: 72 bricks per square meter
  • 80 mm brick: 48 bricks per square meter

To calculate the number of bricks needed, you can multiply the wall's length by its height to get the area, and then multiply that number by the number of bricks per square meter.

You should also add an extra 5–10% to account for waste. To calculate the number of courses, or rows, of bricks needed, divide the wall's height by the height of a single brick.

What are the common sizes of Pressed Facing Bricks?

Our exclusive range of Pressed Facing Bricks come in Metric 65mm x 215mm x 102mm and Imperial 75mm x 228mm x 110mm as standard.

Alternative sizes can be produced on special request.
